The octagonal baptistery honours Saint John the Baptist. The baptistry features three renowned doors of gilded bronze that Michelangelo once called the "Gates of Paradise". Dante Alighieri and many members of the Medici were baptised here. The baptistery´s cavernous ceiling features beautiful mosaics painted by Cimabue and many unknown Venetian artists.
