The Basilica or Church of Santa Croce (holy cross) is an outstanding example of Italian Gothic architecture sitting on Piazza di Santa Croce. The basilica is the most important Franciscan Florentine church as well as the largest in the world. Some of the masterpieces housed in it are Benedetto da Maiano’s beautiful marble pulpit, Stefano Ricci’s monument in honour of Dante Alighieri, Giorgio Vasari’s monument to Michelangelo, Innocenzo Spinazzi’s monument to Niccoló Machiavelli, and Donatello’s Annunziaiton and Saint Luois of Toulouse.
The Duomo is the burial ground of many Florentine, Italian, and foreign figures of the arts, nobility, and sciences. Among them are the tombs of Princess Charlotte Bonaparte, Dante Alighieri, Galileo Galilei, Michelangelo Buonarotti, Niccolò Machiavelli, and Gioacchino Rossini. Although all the chapels are worth seeing, the Chapel Pazzi and Chapel Medici are unrivalled beauties.
