Piazza della Repubblica is the largest piazza in Florence and lies in a very old part of Florence where the Roman forum was once situated.
An eye catching monument in the square is the triumphal arch, sitting on the western side of the square. Its construction was started in 1865 to celebrate the designation of Florence as capital of the kingdom. Rome was named the capital five years later. The equestrian statue of King Vittorio Emmanuele II is another great structure that can be seen in the Piazza. Many bars, restaurants, and boutiques surround the Piazza.
